Cooks Nursery & Trim is a family-owned and operated business located in Jay County, IN. Founded April 5th, of 1984 by Bill Cook, shoveling 5” of snow to set the post for the plant shade house. The nursery was established with the goal of providing a one-stop shop for all your plant and garden needs. Cook's Nursery & Trim was the first to sell bulk mulch in Jay County and has since become one of the top suppliers in the area.
Bill's wife, Kathy, officially joined the team in 1986 and together they have grown the business to include a gift shop and greenhouse. In 1987, Bill purchased the property directly south of the nursery, making Cooks Nursery & Trim the first to own both properties since Beech Harmon who built the home in 1936. This location is ideal for the business. The family's three children, Stephanie, Nathan and Kyle, all enjoyed working in some aspect of the business. Kyle began working in the summers in 1998 and went on to Ball State before joining his parents at Cooks Nursery & Trim.
Sadly, Kathy was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s in 2012 and retired from the business that same year. She passed away in 2017, two days shy of her 66th birthday. In January of 2020, the Coronavirus pandemic prompted Bill to retire and sell the business to his son Kyle and Brock McFarland. Brock had worked at the nursery during summers throughout high school and college and joined the team full-time after a short period of working at Lowes in Bluffton, Indiana and graduating from Ball State. Together, Kyle and Brock purchased the nursery with the hopes of innovating and continuing the legacy that Bill and Kathy started.
